Kiama Pool and Courtyard

Status: Under Construction

The clients wanted to add a residential swimming pool to their Kiama property without overwhelming the existing backyard. The pool needed to feel considered and integrated — not simply dropped into the landscape — while capturing as much sunlight as possible throughout the day.

The backyard was compact, leaving little room for a pool of meaningful size without sacrificing the remaining outdoor space. A significant level change across the site added further complexity, with a traditional in-ground pool potentially creating a sunken, overshadowed space rather than an inviting outdoor feature.

Rather than treating the level change as an obstacle, MJF Architects used it as a design opportunity. Raising the pool to meet the upper level minimises overshadowing from boundary fences and neighbouring structures, significantly improving sun exposure across the swimming area. The elevated position also creates a natural visual feature — the pool becomes a centrepiece of the outdoor space rather than just a utility. The surrounding courtyard was designed to extend the entertaining area alongside the pool, making the most of every square metre.

The design transforms a constrained backyard into a resort-like outdoor space. The raised pool is the standout feature — bold, sun-drenched, and visually striking — while the surrounding courtyard provides generous entertaining space. Currently under construction.
