Escape - Studio/Granny Flat

Status: Concept

The client required a versatile secondary dwelling that could serve multiple purposes: a self-contained residential space, a professional home office, or a creative studio. The design needed to feel calm, inspiring, and filled with natural light — equally at home as a place to live, work, or create.

The existing backyard offered limited space, making efficient planning essential. The key challenge was creating a single building that could genuinely flex between three distinct uses — residential, office, and studio — without feeling compromised in any of them. The structure also needed to sit comfortably alongside the existing dwelling, both aesthetically and functionally.

MJF Architects designed a compact but highly adaptable layout built around large glazed walls that flood the interior with natural light. The open plan is anchored by natural materials — timber, stone, and earthy tones — to create a sense of calm that supports both productivity and relaxation. The spatial arrangement means the same floor area can be reconfigured for a bedroom and living space, a pair of offices with a meeting room, or an open art studio with storage and utility areas.

The resulting 60m2 design works seamlessly across all three intended uses. As a dwelling, it provides comfortable two-bedroom accommodation. As a professional office, it houses two workspaces, a meeting room, and a breakout zone. As a creative studio, it opens into a generous working space with storage and a drying room — all within the same elegant shell.
